Murals of La Jolla: A Celebration of Local Creativity

Setting your sights on a San Diego-bound adventure is always exciting, and those who plan on spending their time in La Jolla specifically have even more to look forward to! Often referred to as “The Jewel City,” La Jolla is a welcoming San Diego neighborhood that flourishes with its own charm and vibrancy that’s well worth exploring while you’re in the area. If you happen to be someone with a passion for the arts, taking time out of your itinerary to make the most of experiencing the Murals of La Jolla might end up being the highlight of your stay the next time you travel this way.

Design with a Purpose

The concept for the Murals of La Jolla began to take shape back in 2010 when a local art advisory committee began to realize the potential of utilizing public art to enhance the character of the La Jolla community. The concept of commissioning public art projects took off quickly as inspired talent took to the walls of La Jolla to bring them to life in color and design. Today, the murals continue to fascinate admirers and often work as a touchpoint for conversations around important topics while bringing an undeniable vitality to the area. The roster of artists who put their work on display spans the globe with typically 16 murals on view at any given time. All of the murals that are on display as part of this public art project are privately funded and crafted on private property. Murals of La Jolla is a project of the Anthenaeum through the La Jolla Community Foundation and to date, has commissioned over 48 works of art.

Take a Mural Tour

There are several options for touring the Murals of La Jolla depending on preference. If you’re up for a self-guided tour of the current murals on display, an updated tour map is always available to download online in advance. La Jolla visitors can also book their place on a guided walking tour that leaves from the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library at 5:30 pm on select evenings. These 90-minute tours are free to enjoy, but groups are limited to 35 guests. If you’re traveling to La Jolla with a group and prefer to book a private guided tour of the murals that’s fully customized, they can be scheduled online as well for $500.
