There is a world of difference in the ways we celebrate the two most important people in our lives, our parents. On Mother’s Day, we spoil Mom with flowers, fancy dinners, and vacations to faraway places, but for Father’s Day, well, he is lucky to get a cheap coffee mug and a corny card. We don’t know why the differences are so drastic, but we do know that this year should be the year where everything changes, the year that you surprise him with a trip to San Diego, a stay in one of our Drift Vacation Homes holiday hideaways, and the knowledge that you recognize all he does for you and appreciate him more than he will ever know. Read below to learn more about fun San Diego Father’s Day activities.
Nothing Fancy
For most of us, our dads are relatively easy to please. They don’t want fancy food served by stuffy waiters, they don’t need white tablecloths, and the vibe of their favorite restaurants is casual and laid back and although the city of San Diego is known for its elevated culinary scene, there are more than a few diners in the region that we can promise your dad will love. Rudford’s Diner, 2900 El Cajon Boulevard, has been a local staple for 75 years, open 24 hours a day and serving reasonably priced all-American meals. Its large counter may remind dad of the counter he hangs out at his own favorite restaurant back home. Brother’s Family Restaurant, 5150 Waring Road, may not have been around for as long—its original opening day was in 1994—but it is famous the city over for Grandma Jennie’s Pancakes, so fluffy and filled with flavor it may change the way dad looks at pancakes forevermore. And finally, Perry’s Café, located at 4620 Pacific Highway, is a diner that all the truckers understand serves the best coffee in town and where the chicken fried steak tastes like childhood memories.
Where the Big Fish Swim
Every amateur angler dreams of catching the big fish, the tuna that stands taller than he does, the marlin with its swordlike snout, maybe even the vermillion rockfish, whose scarlet skin shines bright under the sun, and your San Diego getaway offers the perfect time to help make your dad’s fishing dreams come true. San Diego Deep Sea Fishing offers both private and open-party fishing expeditions, taking dad and guests out to sea in luxurious sports fishing yachts that add drama and excitement to his fishing adventures. The cost of a fishing charter can be intimidating, but isn’t a little extra expense worth making his dreams come true?
The Green, Green Courses of Golf
With an average of 251 days of sunshine and only about 12 inches of rainfall every year, one might imagine that the game of golf might be a popular activity, and we can tell you that it is absolutely one of the top sports activities in the area, with the courses being amongst some of the best in the world. Balboa Park Golf Course, located at 2600 Golf Course Drive, is one of our favorite municipal courses, offering the chance to choose between 9- and 18-hole courses and providing an experience that is challenging without being intimidating. Riverwalk Golf Club, 1150 Fashion Valley Road, is another popular local course in San Diego, offering two choices for the 19th hole and a scenic landscape so peaceful it may help keep tensions low. For the best course in the area, however, dad needs to travel out of San Diego and towards La Jolla and the Torrey Pines Golf Club, located at 11480 N Torrey Pines Boulevard. Home to the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open, the championship course is perched on a cliff above the Pacific Ocean, offering a golf experience that Dad will talk about for years to come.
Take Him Out to the Ball Game
The Padres make their home right here in San Diego, hitting the balls out of the park from their home base in Petco Park, and although they are scheduled to be playing in New York on Father’s Day, June 16, they do have a series of home games taking place June 6th through June 12. Playing the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Oakland Athletics, there is just something special about watching a baseball game on a gorgeous summer day, and even if your dad isn’t a fan of the teams playing, we doubt that he would object to starting his getaway earlier in the week to ensure he gets a chance to experience Petco Park in person.
Naps, Barbecues, and So Much More
All of these adventures are destined to make your dad feel loved, but it will be the moments spent at home with Drift Vacation Homes that will make him realize he is adored.
